Six years after the events of Grey Dawn, Leigh and Chloë are wife and wife, and still sharing a south Philadelphia rowhouse with Leigh’s cousin Hiromi. In the lead-up to the opening of Suwa Shrine, the first Shinto shrine in the eastern US, Hiromi is serving on the shrine’s dedication committee. She invites Leigh, who’s become a teacher of Japanese archery, to take the opening shot at the attached archery range, during the shrine’s dedication, using the Mitsuya family heirloom bow. Leigh has a complicated history with the question of family and the weight of what the bow represents.

But with the help of family old and new, she finds a renewed sense of purpose in reclaiming the best of that inheritance, and the courage to take the bow in hand when the big day arrives.
